Volunteers in Service to Others
The PHJC Volunteer Program brings compassionate men and women together to respond where there is great need. In collaboration with other PHJC ministries, teams of Volunteers—some from far-flung locations like Maryland, Hawaii, Wisconsin, Florida, and Bogota, Colombia—have served alongside the Sisters and PHJC coworkers in the U.S., Kenya and Mexico. Volunteers delivered comfort and supplies to those desperately trying to cross the Mexico/U.S. border; provided food and basic necessities to families in Marshall County and at Sojourner Truth House; and helped in various ministries at the Motherhouse, including the PHJC Greenhouse, MoonTree Studios, and Maria Center.
Pat, a PHJC Volunteer, randomly searched for volunteer opportunities a few years ago and came across the PHJC Volunteer Program. She devoted her time in Plymouth, teaching English to non-native speakers, giving food to those in need, and clerical work at the PHJC Motherhouse. She extended her impact to India and Mexico, teaching English to individuals and PHJCs. Pat said, “The best way to share your belief is through your actions. I struggle with my faith, but as I see these brilliant, active, beautiful women live their charism and follow the example of Jesus, it makes me want to be more like them.”
PHJC Volunteers are empowered to help those in need, especially in Marshall County, Indiana where families living in neglected motels need food and essential supplies. In 2023, 13,330 sack lunches were given to these families, along with holiday meals, Christmas gift bags, and 6,740 bags of groceries. The Volunteer Program was able to help families with electricity bills, gasoline, car repairs, and bus passes.
